There are some new titles available for check-out in the Narthex Library. Some are new releases, some not so new, and some that just bear repeating.
On the newer list, there are a couple of works from popular author; Max Lucado. Cure For the Common Life is about finding those unique abilities God has built into you. Discovering one's life purpose is really about honoring the God who provided those unique abilities in the first place. Also by Lucado: It's Not About Me. The author states that "it is time to understand that life revolves around God, not ourselves." A fulfilling life is not the pursuit of happiness, but the pursuit to glorify God and enjoy Him.
Two books by Edith Schaeffer. Christianity is Jewish is a repeat, but worth noting again. The author connects the meaning of the Bible to God•s main purpose, and makes a great companion to Bible study. In Schaeffer's The Art of Homemaking, she shares the many opportunities of artistic expression that can be found in ordinary, everyday life. It can be as simple as using a tablecloth, a single flower, or a candle on the table to make a simple family mealtime seem like a special occasion. We can be gracious homemakers and, at the same time, show God's hand in our homes by taking advantage of all He has provided.
Of special note, are two books by Bruce Feiler. Walking the Bible is a documentary of Bruce Feiler's journey through the stories in the first five books of the Bible. He presents many views which you may (or may not) agree with, but at least makes you think and learn more about the history behind your faith. The second Feiler book: Walking the Bible, a Photographic Journey is an account of an amazing 10,000 mile journey across the Near and Middle East in search of the locales at which many of the Old Testament's key events took place. The combination of personal narrative, travelogue, spiritual quest, and modern politics earn this work a place on the best seller list. It is a moving examination of the human relationship with God. There is so much more to be said of this work and pictorial, you•ll just have to find out for yourself.
For C.S. Lewis fans, there is Jack's Life. Written by Lewis' stepson, Douglas Gresham. Gresham shares memories of his relationship with his stepdad, Jack, as he was known to friends and family. Gresham was a child when his mother passed away, and he was raised by his stepfather; C.S. Lewis.
As a reminder, if you are concerned and/or confused about the mixture of facts and falsehoods in the popular book and movie: The Da Vinci Code, there are two quick reads. The Da Vinci Myth and The Gospel Truth are available. Also, an excellent 60-minute DVD can be checked out from the church office during office hours, Monday through Thursday.
